An Open Letter to My Heart

I hear you.

I hear you beating.

I know you felt let down. You put your hope in something you didn’t get. So you looked for something to blame–something…someone…to get mad at. But you couldn’t. Because you knew there was nothing and no one to fault.

You didn’t want to cry…because you didn’t want to feel weak. So you bit your lip and listened to Eminem, until the fighter in you came out shadowboxing, ready to fight. You just didn’t know who to fight.

You didn’t want to hear the voice of hope…because you weren’t ready to let go of what you were holding on to. But isn’t hope the voice that speaks when you don’t have what you desire? You wanted what you wanted and you didn’t get it.

But you know what? It’s okay. That’s life. You won’t always understand why, but it is the way it is.

You can want whatever you want as much as you want…that doesn’t mean you’ll get it.
You can think you deserve something as many times as you like…and still not get it.
It’s a good lesson.

In life, if you want something, you have to work for it. Not everything is free.

Am I saying never hope in anything ever again? Heck no! Hope. Fight to keep hope
alive. Hope and dream as much as your beautiful, resilient heart can. Then match it with work. Great things will happen. Exchange entitlement for gratitude. Trade doubt for faith.

I’m proud of you. I’m proud of how you bounce back so fast. You fall, but you get up again–ten times stronger. And through it all, you haven’t lost that spark of hope. You’re resilient–you know how to stretch, how to bend, and how to adjust to the environments you’re put in–all the while keeping who you are.

Don’t stop. Don’t stop learning. You’re stronger than they know–than even you yourself know at times. I know you see things clearly now. It’s not a haze anymore. And you’re excited for the new thing that’s coming. See? It’s not how you thought it would be. You’re more than fine. You’re happy. See what happens when you trust life’s process? 😉

So with every beat, hope. As long as you have blood coursing through your veins, keep at it–learn to love the work.

I hear you.

I hear you beating.
